Easy hardware tuning, monitoring, profiles, and recovery for Windows and Linux.
Simple Tuning Utility, or STU, is a lightweight desktop utility designed to make common CPU, integrated GPU, dedicated GPU, and power-management adjustments easier to access without forcing users to work directly with command-line tools, configuration files, or low-level system interfaces.
STU brings supported tuning controls together in one straightforward interface while placing a strong emphasis on hardware detection, safe limits, verification, recovery, and clear feedback.
Built for Simple, Practical Tuning
Instead of presenting dozens of unexplained advanced controls, Simple Tuning Utility focuses on useful everyday adjustments and automatically determines which features are available on the current system.

Unsupported controls are disabled rather than pretending that a feature will work on hardware that cannot safely expose it.
Automatic Hardware Detection
STU examines the system at startup and determines which tuning backends and controls are actually available.
The program supports a variety of:
- AMD Ryzen processors
- Intel processors
- AMD Radeon integrated graphics
- Intel integrated graphics
- NVIDIA graphics cards
- Windows power-management interfaces
- Linux kernel power-management interfaces
Exact capabilities depend on your CPU, GPU, firmware, drivers, operating system, and the interfaces exposed by the hardware.
Hardware Monitoring
Use the built-in monitoring tools to keep an eye on important system information while tuning.
Available monitoring can include:
- CPU usage
- CPU temperature
- GPU usage
- GPU temperature
- Clock speeds
- Memory utilization
- Power information
- Additional detected hardware statistics
A dedicated Performance Dashboard provides a clearer real-time view when you want to watch system behavior while testing a profile.
Save Your Own Profiles
Create tuning profiles for different situations.
For example:
Quiet Profile Reduce power and frequency limits for lighter workloads.
Balanced Profile Use moderate limits for everyday computing.
Performance Profile Apply your preferred performance-oriented settings for demanding applications.
Profiles can be selected manually or used with STU's automatic switching system.
Automatic Profile Switching
STU can automatically change profiles based on configured conditions.
This makes it possible to maintain different tuning behavior without repeatedly opening the program and adjusting controls yourself.
The automatic switching system has been designed so profile changes are re-evaluated when profile settings change, and background hardware operations are serialized to avoid competing tuning transactions.
Thermal Guard
Thermal Guard adds an additional protection layer for supported systems.
When configured temperature conditions are reached, STU can temporarily reduce or release performance-oriented tuning and later restore the requested profile when conditions recover.
Thermal Guard is designed to work alongside automatic profile switching without the two background systems fighting over hardware state.
First-Run Hardware Calibration
STU includes a first-run hardware calibration process designed to learn what capabilities are actually exposed by the current machine.
This helps the application avoid showing controls that cannot be supported reliably and provides more appropriate ranges for detected hardware.
Apply Settings at Startup
A saved profile can optionally be applied after signing in.
If Automatic Profile Switching is enabled, STU gives the automatic policy system control instead of allowing multiple startup tuning tasks to compete with one another.
Reset and Recovery
Hardware tuning should always have a recovery path.
STU records supported pre-change values before making hardware adjustments and provides a Reset to Defaults system for restoring captured settings where exact restoration is possible.
The recovery system includes safeguards designed to:
- Validate stored recovery information before using it
- Reject malformed or implausible recovery values
- Verify supported hardware writes
- Roll back failed transactions when possible
- Preserve recovery information when a reset does not fully succeed
- Prevent background tuning policies from interfering with a reset
- Avoid reporting a partial reset as a complete success
Some firmware-level AMD controls cannot always be reconstructed exactly after they have been changed. In those situations, STU clearly identifies when a reboot may be required instead of inventing an unsafe default value.
Safer Hardware Transactions
STU does more than simply send a command and assume it worked.
Where supported, tuning operations use a:
Capture → Apply → Read Back → Verify → Roll Back on Failure
approach.
Hardware-changing operations are also serialized so the graphical interface, Thermal Guard, and automatic switching system cannot intentionally perform overlapping tuning transactions.
Intel Power Control
On supported Intel systems, STU uses hardware-reported RAPL information rather than assuming a universal power-unit value.
This allows package-power limits to be calculated using the CPU's actual power encoding while preserving unrelated register fields.
On Linux, STU prefers kernel-managed interfaces such as:
- RAPL powercap
- CPUFreq
- DRM/sysfs GPU controls
instead of using raw MSR writes for normal tuning.
Legacy raw-MSR support is retained only where necessary to restore recovery information created by older STU versions.
NVIDIA Safety
NVIDIA tuning uses live state verification where supported.
To avoid silently modifying the wrong graphics card, STU currently refuses NVIDIA tuning on systems where multiple NVIDIA GPUs make adapter selection ambiguous.
System Tray Support
STU can continue running in the notification area when minimized.
Windows uses the native notification-area implementation with recovery handling for Explorer/taskbar restarts.
Linux supports modern XApp StatusIcon environments such as Linux Mint/Cinnamon, with legacy X11 tray support available as a fallback.
Designed for Windows and Linux
Simple Tuning Utility is developed as a cross-platform application with dedicated implementations for each operating system rather than assuming one tuning method works everywhere.
Supported targets include modern:
- Windows systems
- Ubuntu-based Linux distributions
- Linux Mint
- Debian-based distributions
Hardware-level feature availability will vary between machines.
Offline-Friendly
STU is designed so the normal application does not require an internet connection to perform supported tuning operations.
The packaged versions include the application runtime and required components needed by the supplied build wherever practical.

The interface is designed around a 1024×768 or larger workspace and adapts to available desktop working area to reduce clipped controls on smaller displays.

Important Hardware Notice
Hardware tuning always carries some risk.
Available controls depend on the processor, graphics hardware, motherboard or laptop firmware, operating system, drivers, and vendor interfaces available on each machine.
Simple Tuning Utility includes detection, range checking, read-back verification, rollback, and recovery features intended to reduce risk, but no tuning application can guarantee that every hardware and firmware combination will behave identically.
Users should make changes gradually, monitor temperatures and system stability, and understand the limits of their particular hardware.
